Improving the Rank of Accredited Journals, DRTPM of the Ministry of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology and LPPM of Undana Organize Workshop

KUPANG – In an effort to improve the ranking of accredited journals, the Directorate of Research, Technology, and Community Engagement (DRTPM) under the Ministry of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology, along with the Institute of Research and Community Engagement at Nusa Cendana University (Undana), organized a workshop titled "Enhancing the Ranking of Accredited Journals." The workshop was inaugurated by Undana's Vice Rector I for Academic Affairs, Prof. Dr. drh. Annytha I. R. Detha, M.Si, at Hotel Neo Kupang on Wednesday, August 30th, 2023.

Four speakers were present to deliver the material, namely Prof. Dr. Ir. Kuswanto, MP, as the Chairman of the Indonesian Periodical Editors Association from Brawijaya University in Malang, Dhiana Puspitawati, SH., LLM., Ph.D., as the Chairman of the Indonesian Journal Managers Association for Law from Brawijaya University in Malang, Utama Alan Deta, S.Pd., M.Pd from Surabaya University, and Eko Pramudya Laksan, S.Pd from the Directorate of Research, Technology, and Community Engagement under the Ministry of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology.

Also present were the Sub-Coordinator of Journals from DRTPM, Risky Prasetya, and the Head of the Institute of Research and Community Engagement at Undana, Dr. Ir. Damianus Adar, M.Ec, along with the workshop participants who are journal managers within the Undana community as well as from several Higher Education Institutions in the East Nusa Tenggara Province.

Undana's Vice Rector I, Prof. Annytha Detha, stated in her address that the quality of journal management in a university has become a priority. Based on her 8-year experience in managing journals within a study program, Prof. Annytha understands the difficulty of enhancing journal accreditation. "And, it requires contributions of thoughts and greater efforts," she expressed.

She admitted that they were surprised by the workshop being held at Undana and accommodating all journal managers in NTT. "Certainly, this is a great hope for us to see what strategies we can implement to enhance the quality of journals at Undana as well as at state and private universities in NTT," Prof. Annytha expressed.

According to him, the workshop didn't only focus on journal management but also emphasized the effort to elevate research and findings that can be recognized and utilized by the broader community.

"So, our medium is the journal. I believe you are aware of how significant journals are in terms of publication. Hence, we are very delighted because this is an opportunity for us to explore all findings and research related to natural resources in NTT, so that it can benefit both the Indonesian and international communities," he explained.

Furthermore, he also requested DRTPM to provide specific strategies and tips to improve the accreditation ranking of journals. This is because some journals in NTT, particularly at Undana, have faced difficulties in obtaining accreditation and improving their accreditation rankings. This situation contrasts with several universities in Java.

Therefore, it is hoped that the speakers can share insights on strategies to enhance the ranking of journals in NTT, especially at Undana. As a result, Prof. Annytha continued, the outcomes of the workshop can provide an opportunity for Undana and other universities in NTT to improve journal accreditation.

Sub-Coordinator of Journals from the Directorate of Research, Technology, and Community Engagement, Risky Prasetya, mentioned on that occasion that it's not easy for a state university to host a workshop on enhancing journal rankings. "Hopefully, the accreditation of your journals will continue to improve. Congratulations to all of you for participating in this workshop, as you were selected from the many hundreds we chose to attend," he said.

He mentioned that currently, there are a total of 8,884 accredited journals, with a majority falling under SINTA 4 and 5 categories. He stated that it's very challenging to achieve SINTA 1 or 2 accreditation. "If Vice Rector I of Undana mentioned the strategy, last year there were over 7,000 registered journals, and a year later, this year there are already over 3,000 journals. Therefore, this year we will temporarily halt new registrations to assess the situation, as the system is still being developed," he explained.

This means, as Risky Prasetya clarified, there are around 11,000 journals in the queue and about 7,000 journals still being evaluated. He mentioned that administrative requirements have increased; for instance, names not matching ISSNs, incorrect registered issue numbers, and some not providing editor usernames and passwords. He also emphasized the need for publication ethics, particularly when submitting articles to accredited journals.

Meanwhile, Cynthia Dewi Gaina, M.Trop. V.Sc, as the committee chairperson and Head of the Innovation Development, Publication, and Intellectual Property Center at Undana, mentioned that the workshop was organized based on an offer from DRTPM to Undana, aiming to involve around 20 journal managers from NTT. She shared that there was a grant given at the beginning of 2023 by Undana's Rector and Vice Rector I, Prof. Annytha, to provide grants to journal managers at Undana.

In the workshop, Cynthia mentioned, a total of 20 journals will be dissected by the four speakers present. She also expressed gratitude to the speakers for their willingness to share knowledge, particularly in journal management.

For your information, two moderators who guided the presentation of material and journal dissection are Dr. Dance Sina, MT., Ph.D, Coordinator of the Community Service Learning Center at Undana's LPPM, and Dr. Deci Kore E. Nuban, M.Hum, from the Human Rights, Gender, and Child Corps at Undana's LPPM. (rfl)
